GIBSON CITY - Oscar L. Benningfield, 95, of Gibson City died at 8:14 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 5, 2012) at the Gibson Area Hospital.
His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 10, at Lamb Funeral Home in Gibson City. Burial will be in Drummer Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Lamb Funeral Home.
Mr. Benningfield was born on March 28, 1916, in Taylor County, Ky., a son of Edward and Ida Belle (Wise) Benningfield. He married Carrie Elizabeth Followay on April 9, 1939, in Lebanon, Ky. She died on April 20, 2006.
Surviving are four sons, Bob (Connie) Benningfield of Gibson City, Jerry (Martha) Benningfield of Fulton, Mo., John (Terri) Benningfield of Gibson City and George (Bonnie) Benningfield of Ocala, Fla.; two daughters, Jane (John) Cummins and Georgia (Jerry) Lynch, both of Gibson City; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Oscar farmed in the Gibson City area for the major part of his career. He was also employed at L.F. Swanson Well Service for 10 years and for B & H Agricultural Services for three years before retiring in 1990.
After retiring, he enjoyed raising a garden, mowing and tending the lawn and working around the house. Most of all, he enjoyed tinkering because he truly believed that even if it worked he could make it work better. He also enjoyed telling stories of his youth to all his grandchildren.
