Charles "Ed" Briggs, age 75, of Gibson City died at 6:30 a.m. Friday May 8, 2009, at his home.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Gibson City, with Father Dennis Spies officiating. Burial will be in Drummer Township Cemetery in Gibson City with military rites by the Lee Lowery American Legion Post 568. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Lamb Funeral Home in Gibson City with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Monday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Briggs was born Nov. 1, 1933, in Urbana, a son of Benjamen H. and Vera B. Ashby. He married Carla Gravlin on Aug. 31, 1990. She survives in Gibson City. Also surviving are five children, Chad Briggs of Los Angles, Calif., Joette (Tom) O'Neill, Columbia, Mo., Michael Briggs of St. Louis, Mo., Anjanette (Eric) Christensen of Melvin and Kenneth (Juliana) Girkin of Kuwait; seven grandchildren, Meghan and Cory O'Neill, Dylan and Riley Christensen, Shawn, Christopher and Andrew Girkin; three nephews, Tom Briggs, Jim Barnes, and Ron Cline; and two nieces, Jackie Lang and Nancy Faulk.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and two sisters.
Ed was an army veteran of the Korean War. He was a retired iron worker. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0650 in Mansfield the Elliott AMVETS Post 0267, the Gibson City Masonic Lodge 733, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Military Order of the Stars and Bars. Memorials may be made to the Carle Hospice Program.
