Ruby Smith Hawthorne
Mrs. Ruby Smith Hawthorne of 1807 Irish Street, South Boston, Virginia died Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in South Boston, Virginia April 26, 1919 and was 89 years of age. She was the daughter of the late William David Smith Sr. and Hallie Ella Chandler Smith and was married to the late Waverly Edward Hawthorne Jr. Mrs. Hawthorne was a member of First Baptist Church, South Boston, where she was a former youth Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include one son, David Cousins Hawthorne of South Boston Va.; two nephews, William Michael Duggan and wife, Denise Lynn of Terre Haute, Ind. and Dr. Donald Edward Duggan and wife, Dr. Erica Duggan of Indianapolis, Ind.
One brother, William David Smith Jr.; and two sisters, Helen Lee Smith Duggan and Mary Edna Smith, also preceded Mrs. Hawthorne in death.
Funeral services for Mrs. Hawthorne were held Sunday, January 25, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Susan Davis officiating. Burial followed in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
